Who Were in Error? GSAM 216

At this date there were those among the Adventist believers who had not yet received clear light on the sanctuary service of Christ, their attention not yet having been called to the third angel’s message. These erred in confounding this outer door of the sanctuary with the shut door in Luke 13:25-28. However, these were not Seventh-day Adventists. But who they were, and how that doctrine originated, and what circumstances led to such conclusions, we shall endeavor to show. GSAM 216.2

The people who had separated themselves from the nominal churches under the proclamation of the advent message, as well as those from whom they had thus separated, are addressed in the testimony to the fifth and sixth of the seven churches of the Revelation. The admonition to the fifth, the Sardis, church reads, “Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.” 5Revelation 3:3. From this language it is evident that the persons thus addressed had heard the proclamation of the Lord’s coming. They had professedly received it, but were now about to renounce the same. GSAM 217.1
