Now let us look at the facts in the case. Until the year 1798 the exponents of prophecy had no light as to when the twenty-three hundred days would end. They could understand the symbols, the image and the beasts of the book of Daniel, but could not tell where the twenty-three hundred days would end, for as yet they had no understanding as to when the days began. As proof on this point we read in the Midnight Cry, an Adventist paper then published in New York City, under date of June 15, 1842, “It is truly interesting to find the various independent writers who since 1798 have seen what was entirely unperceived before—that the seventy weeks was a key to the twenty-three hundred days.” GSAM 84.3
