Picture: Counsel #16 — Physical Symptoms CMH 18.1
In moments of intense anxiety or a panic attack, our bodies can feel like they’ve turned against us. Our muscles tighten, breath comes in quick, shallow gasps, and our heart pounds a frantic rhythm. This cascade of physical symptoms can be incredibly frightening, sometimes making us feel like we’re losing control or even facing the end. It’s important to remember that these feelings, while overwhelming, are not a sign of something physically wrong. They’re a signal that our nervous system is in overdrive.[19] https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/what-is-a-panic-attack CMH 18.2
One of the most powerful tools we have in these moments is our faith. While physical remedies, such as a warm bath, or mindful breathing can help calm the body, centering our thoughts on God can bring peace to our minds. He is the God of strength, a steady anchor in the storm. We can remind ourselves that He is with us, caring for us with an unending love and a power that is greater than any fear we face. CMH 18.3
“Say to those who are fearful-hearted, ‘Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come ... and save you.” Isaiah 35:4 NKJV CMH 18.4
“It is not work that kills; it is worry. The only way to avoid worry is to take every trouble to Christ. Let us not look on the dark side. Let us cultivate cheerfulness of spirit.” Ellen White in Letters and Manuscripts, Letter 208, vol. 18, 1903, par. 1 CMH 18.5
Reflect: When you’re experiencing anxiety, what specific promises or truths about God from the Bible come to mind that can help anchor you? CMH 18.6
