Counsel #12 — Political Neglect CSI 152
Picture: Counsel #12 — Political Neglect CSI 152.1
In some countries, there is a lack of political will to address global health challenges, due to several factors: CSI 152.2
- A focus on other priorities, such as economic development, security, or social welfare.
- Lack of understanding of the importance of global health. Some governments may not fully realize that global health challenges can have a significant impact on their own country.
- Nationalism/exceptionalism. Some governments may believe that their own country is superior to other countries, and that they should not have to help other countries address their health challenges.
- Fear of the costs. In actuality, the costs of inaction might be even higher. For example, if a government does not invest in vaccination programs, it may face a major outbreak of a preventable disease, which could have significant economic and social impact.
