Challenging Legalism: Choosing Radical Hospitality — July 4 [Description]Overview of Luke 14:1-14:In Luke 14:1-6, Jesus heals a man with dropsy on the Sabbath while dining at a Pharisee’s house, challenging the legalistic mindset of the religious leaders. He exposes their hypocrisy by asking whether they’d rescue a child or ox on the Sabbath—highlighting how mercy should trump rigid tradition. In verses 7—11, Jesus tells a parable about choosing seats at a wedding feast. He warns against seeking places of honor and urges people to choose the lowest place instead. The key message: “Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (v. 11)Then in verses 12—14, Jesus turns to the host and challenges the norm of only inviting those who can return the favor. Instead, He calls for radical hospitality—inviting the poor, crippled, lame, and blind, promising that the reward will come from God, not people. These passages call for people to rethink status, pride, and popularity, and instead live out kingdom values: humility, inclusion, and selfless generosity. 365D 185

Luke 14:1-14 365D 185.1

Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they watched Him closely. 365D 185.2

And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy. 365D 185.3

And Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the [a]NU adds or not Sabbath?” 365D 185.4

But they kept silent. And He took him and healed him, and let him go. 365D 185.5

Then He answered them, saying, “Which of you, having a [b]NU, M son donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” 365D 185.6

And they could not answer Him regarding these things. 365D 185.7

So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them: 365D 185.8

“When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; 365D 185.9

and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. 365D 185.10

But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. 365D 185.11

For whoever exalts himself will be [c]put down humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” 365D 185.12

Then He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. 365D 185.13

But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the [d]crippled maimed, the lame, the blind. 365D 185.14

And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” 365D 185.15
