V. Increasing Earthquakes Seen Fulfilling Prophecy PFF3 172

A good many sermons by scholarly men were preached on the increasing earthquakes, particularly the quake of October 29, 1727. For example, there was a book by NATHANIEL GOOKIN (M.A.), pastor in Hampton, New York, on The Day of Trouble Near, The Tokens of it, and a Due Preparation for It (1728). There was another by JOHN BARNARD (M.A.), pastor of the Marblehead church, on Earthquakes Under the Divine Government (1727), and one by SAMUEL WIGGLESWORTH (M.A.), of Ipswich, on A Religions Fear of God’s Tokens, Explained and Urged (1728), who stressed the prophetic aspect-based on Matthew 24 and Luke 21. There was also BENJAMIN COLMAN, of Boston, on The Judgments of Providence in the Hand of Christ; His Voice to us in the Terrible Earthquake (1728). In this latter presentation, there is in addition a vigorous presentation of the four world empires of prophecy. PFF3 172.3
