But in the East and the West was a brighter picture. Four months before the Battle Creek College board acted to close, two new Adventist schools were opened—South Lancaster Academy, in Massachusetts, under the guiding hand of the seasoned S. N. Haskell, and Healdsburg Academy, in California, something less than a hundred miles north of the Bay cities of San Francisco and Oakland. Haskell brought Goodloe Bell to the Massachusetts school. W. C. White led in forming the Healdsburg school.
