After living some months in a rented house, by the aid of their friends they secured an acre and a half of land on which a modest home costing some $500 was built. With improvements and the increase in values he was able to sell it in 1863 for $1,500. He then secured a home nearer the publishing house, costing $1,300. Improvements and the development of an orchard and other features costing $1,200, and the rise in property value, brought this to a value of $4,500 when it was sold.
