Exodus 22

1 ^{a22:1 This verse is 21:37 in MT} “If a man steals an ox or sheep and slaughters it or sells it, he is to repay five oxen ^{b22:1 Or cattle} for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.ISV — Exodus 22:1

2 “If a thief is found while breaking into a house, ^{c22:2 Lit. while breaking in} and is struck down and dies, it is not a capital crime ^{d22:2 Lit. dies, there is no bloodguilt} in that case, ^{e22:2 Lit. for him or for it}ISV — Exodus 22:2

3 but if the sun has risen on him, then it is a capital crime ^{f22:3 Lit. then there is bloodguilt} in that case. ^{g22:3 Lit. for him or for it} A thief ^{h22:3 Lit. He} shall certainly make restitution, but if he has nothing, he is to be sold ^{i22:3 i.e. sold into slavery} for his theft.ISV — Exodus 22:3

4 If what was stolen is actually found alive in his possession, whether an ox, a donkey or a sheep, he is to repay double.ISV — Exodus 22:4

5 “When a man lets a field or vineyard be grazed over or releases his livestock so that they graze in another man’s field, he is to make restitution from the best of his field or vineyard. ^{j22:5 Lit. or the best of his vineyard}ISV — Exodus 22:5

6 “When a fire breaks out and spreads into thorn bushes and consumes stacked grain or standing grain or the field, the one who started the fire certainly is to make restitution.ISV — Exodus 22:6

7 “When a man gives his neighbor money or goods for safekeeping and it’s stolen from the neighbor’s house, the thief, if found, is to repay double.ISV — Exodus 22:7

8 If the thief is not found, the owner of the house is to appear before the judges ^{k22:8 Or God} to see ^{l22:8 The Heb. lacks to see} whether or not the thief took ^{m22:8 Lit. not he laid his hands on} his neighbor’s property.ISV — Exodus 22:8

9 “In every ownership dispute ^{n22:9 Lit. matter of transgression} involving an ox, donkey, sheep, garment, or anything that is lost where a person says, ‘This is mine,’ ^{o22:9 Lit. This is it} the case between the two of them is to come before the judges, ^{p22:9 Or God} and the one that the judges ^{q22:9 Or God} declare guilty is to repay double to his neighbor.ISV — Exodus 22:9

10 “When a man gives a donkey, ox, sheep, or any animal to his neighbor for safe keeping, and it dies or is injured or is driven away when no one is looking,ISV — Exodus 22:10

11 the two of them are to take an oath in the LORD’s presence that the accused ^{r22:11 Lit. that he} has not taken ^{s22:11 Lit. not laid his hands on} his neighbor’s property. Its owner is to accept this, and the neighbor ^{t22:11 Lit. he} is not to make restitution.ISV — Exodus 22:11

12 But if it was actually stolen from him, the neighbor ^{u22:12 Lit. he} is to make restitution to its owner.ISV — Exodus 22:12

13 If it was torn to pieces, let the neighbor ^{v22:13 Lit. him} bring the remains ^{w22:13 Lit. bring it} as evidence, and he is not to make restitution for what was torn apart.ISV — Exodus 22:13

14 “When a man borrows ^{x22:14 Lit. asks} an animal from his neighbor, and it’s injured or dies while its owner was not with it, he is certainly to make restitution.ISV — Exodus 22:14

15 If its owner was with it, he is not to make restitution. If it was hired, its fee covers the loss.” ^{y22:15 Lit. its fee comes; i.e. the fee compensates the owner for the loss}ISV — Exodus 22:15

16 “When a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged to be married and has sexual relations with her, he must pay her bride price, and she is to become his wife.ISV — Exodus 22:16

17 If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he is to pay an amount ^{z22:17 Lit. silver} equal to the bride price for virgins.ISV — Exodus 22:17

18 “You are not to allow a sorceress to live.ISV — Exodus 22:18

19 “Whoever has sexual relations with an animal is certainly to be put to death.ISV — Exodus 22:19

20 “Anyone who sacrifices to a god, except the LORD alone, is to be utterly destroyed.ISV — Exodus 22:20

21 “You are not to wrong or oppress an alien, because you were aliens in the land of Egypt.ISV — Exodus 22:21

22 “You are not to mistreat any widow or orphan.ISV — Exodus 22:22

23 If you do mistreat them, they’ll certainly cry out to me, and I’ll immediately hear their cry.ISV — Exodus 22:23

24 And I’ll be angry and will kill you with swords, ^{aa22:24 i.e. using invasions by foreign armies} and your wives will become widows and your children orphans.ISV — Exodus 22:24

25 “If you loan money to my people, to the poor among you, don’t be like a creditor to them and don’t impose interest on them.ISV — Exodus 22:25

26 If you take your neighbor’s coat as collateral, you are to return it to him by sunset,ISV — Exodus 22:26

27 for it’s his only covering; it’s his outer garment, ^{bb22:27 Lit. his coat for his skin} for what else can he sleep in? And when he cries out to me, I’ll hear him, for I am gracious.ISV — Exodus 22:27

28 “You are not to blaspheme God or curse a ruler of your people.ISV — Exodus 22:28

29 “You are not to hold back the fullness of your harvest ^{cc22:29 Lit. your fullness} and the outflow of your wine presses. ^{dd22:29 Lit. your outflow} You are to give to me the firstborn of your sons.ISV — Exodus 22:29

30 You are to do the same with your oxen and your sheep. They shall be with their mother for seven days and then on the eighth day you are to give them to me.ISV — Exodus 22:30

31 “You are to be people set apart ^{ee22:31 Lit. holy} for me. You are not to eat flesh torn apart in the field; you are to throw it to the dogs.”ISV — Exodus 22:31
