Mark 10

1 Then Jesus ^{a10:1 Lit. he} left that place and went into the territory of Judea on the other side ^{b10:1 i.e. the east side} of the Jordan. Crowds gathered around him as usual, and he began to teach them again as was his custom.ISV — Mark 10:1

2 Some Pharisees came to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”ISV — Mark 10:2

3 “What did Moses command you?” he responded.ISV — Mark 10:3

4 They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to divorce her.” ^{c10:4 Cf. Deut 24:1, 3}ISV — Mark 10:4

5 But Jesus told them, “It was because of your hardness of heart that he wrote this command for you.ISV — Mark 10:5

6 But from the beginning of creation, ‘God ^{d10:6 Other mss. read He} made them male and female.’ ^{e10:6 Cf. Gen 1:27; 5:2}ISV — Mark 10:6

7 That’s why ‘a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife,ISV — Mark 10:7

9 Therefore, what God has joined together, man must never separate.”ISV — Mark 10:9

10 Back in the house, the disciples asked him about this again.ISV — Mark 10:10

11 So he told them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.ISV — Mark 10:11

14 When Jesus saw this, he became furious and told them, “Let the little children come to me, and stop keeping them away, because the kingdom of God belongs to people like these.ISV — Mark 10:14

15 I tell all of you ^{k10:15 The Gk. pronoun you is pl.} with certainty, whoever doesn’t receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.”ISV — Mark 10:15

16 Then after he had hugged the children, ^{l10:16 Lit. hugged them} he tenderly blessed them as he laid his hands on them. ( ; )ISV — Mark 10:16

17 As Jesus ^{m10:17 Lit. he} was setting out again, ^{n10:17 Lit. out on a journey} a man ran up to him, knelt down in front of him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”ISV — Mark 10:17

18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “Nobody is good except for one—God.ISV — Mark 10:18

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. Then he told him, “You’re missing one thing. Go and sell everything you own, give the money ^{u10:21 The Gk. lacks the money} to the destitute, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come back and follow me.”ISV — Mark 10:21

22 Shocked at this statement, the man ^{v10:22 Lit. he} went away sad, because he had many possessions. ( ; )ISV — Mark 10:22

23 Then Jesus looked around and told his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!”ISV — Mark 10:23

24 The disciples were startled by these words, but Jesus told them again, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in their wealth ^{w10:24 Other mss. lack for those who trust in their wealth} to get into the kingdom of God!ISV — Mark 10:24

25 It’s easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into the kingdom of God.”ISV — Mark 10:25

26 The disciples ^{x10:26 Lit. They} were utterly amazed and asked one another, ^{y10:26 Other mss. read to him} “Then who can be saved?”ISV — Mark 10:26

27 Jesus looked at them intently and said, “For humans it’s impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God.”ISV — Mark 10:27

28 Then Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.”ISV — Mark 10:28

29 Jesus said, “I tell all of you ^{z10:29 The Gk. pronoun you is pl.} with certainty, there is no one who has left his home, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children, or fields because of me and the gospelISV — Mark 10:29

30 who will not receive a hundred times as much here in this world—homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields, along with persecution—as well as eternal life in the age to come.ISV — Mark 10:30

31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”ISV — Mark 10:31

32 Now Jesus and his disciples ^{aa10:32 Lit. They} had been on the road going up to Jerusalem, with Jesus walking ahead of them. They were astonished, and the others who followed were afraid. 33 “Pay attention! We’re going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the high priests and the scribes, and they’ll condemn him to death. Then they’ll hand him over to the unbelievers, ^{cc10:33 Lit. gentiles ; i.e. unbelieving non-Jews}ISV — Mark 10:33

34 and they’ll make fun of him, spit on him, whip him, and kill him. But after three days he’ll be raised.” ( )ISV — Mark 10:34

35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, went to Jesus ^{dd10:35 Lit. him} and told him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask you.”ISV — Mark 10:35

36 He asked them, “What do you want me to do for you?”ISV — Mark 10:36

37 They asked him, “Let us sit in your glory, one on your right and one on your left.”ISV — Mark 10:37

38 But Jesus told them, “You don’t realize what you’re asking. Can you drink from the cup that I’m going to drink from or be baptized with the baptism with which I’m going to be baptized?”ISV — Mark 10:38

39 They told him, “We can.” Jesus told them, “You will drink from the cup that I’m going to drink and be baptized with the baptism with which I’m going to be baptized.ISV — Mark 10:39

40 But it’s not up to me to grant you a seat at my right or my left. Those positions have already been prepared for others.”ISV — Mark 10:40

41 When the ten other disciples ^{ee10:41 The Gk. lacks other disciples} heard this, they began to be furious with James and John.ISV — Mark 10:41

42 Jesus called his disciples ^{ff10:42 Lit. called them} and told them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers among the unbelievers ^{gg10:42 Lit. gentiles ; i.e. unbelieving non-Jews} lord it over them, and their superiors act like tyrants over them.ISV — Mark 10:42

43 That’s not the way it should be among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,ISV — Mark 10:43

44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave to everyone,ISV — Mark 10:44

45 because even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many people.” ( ; )ISV — Mark 10:45

46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus, ^{hh10:46 Lit. he} his disciples, and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus (that is, the son of Timaeus) was sitting by the road.ISV — Mark 10:46

47 When he heard that Jesus of Nazareth was there, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”ISV — Mark 10:47

48 Many people sternly told him to be quiet, but he started shouting even louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”ISV — Mark 10:48

49 So Jesus stopped and said, “Call him!” So they called the blind man and told him, “Have courage! Get up. He’s calling you.”ISV — Mark 10:49

50 He threw off his coat, jumped up, and went to Jesus.ISV — Mark 10:50

51 Then Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man told him, “Rabbouni, ^{ii10:51 Rabbouni is Heb. for My Master and/or Teacher} I want to see again.”ISV — Mark 10:51

52 Jesus told him, “Go. Your faith has made you well.” At once the man ^{jj10:52 Lit. he} could see again, and he began to follow Jesus ^{kk10:52 Lit. him} down the road.ISV — Mark 10:52
