VARIETIES
Lawton, or New Rochelle.-“Very large, irregular, roundish-oval, black, very juicy, and sweet when fully ripe, but it does not reach this point until several days after the fruit has become black, at which time it is very soft and sweet. It is a strong and vigorous grower, and very productive. The fruit commences ripening rather late, and continues for a long time, and unless the soil is naturally moist, or the ground covered with mulch, many of the late berries will fail to come to maturity. The canes are rather tender, often winter-killing if not protected.”SFCC 15.4
Dorchester.-Fruit large, sweet, rich and excellent, with considerable of the wild Blackberry flavor. An excellent variety, and quite hardy.”SFCC 16.1
Kittatinny.-Large, moderately firm, sweet, rich and excellent. Very productive and hardy.”SFCC 16.2
Wilson’s Early.-Very large, black, firm, sweet, rich and good. Fruit ripens early, and entire crop matures in about two weeks.”-Fuller.SFCC 16.3
