When Pilate heard that Herod was in Jerusalem, so he sent Jesus and His accusers to Herod. Pilate thought this would make Herod responsible for the trial and sentencing of Jesus. SRme 1.955
Herod had become hardened in sin. His conscience was stained with the terrible sin of murdering John the Baptist. When Herod heard of Jesus and His wonderful miracles, Herod feared and trembled because he thought Jesus was John the Baptist risen from the dead. SRme 1.956
Pilate and Herod had been enemies. Now Herod was pleased that Pilate had sent Jesus to him. Herod thought that at last Pilate recognized his authority as king. This had the effect of making the two rulers friends. Herod was happy to see Jesus, because he expected Jesus to work some great miracle for him. But Jesus did not work miracles to satisfy curiosity or for His own safety. Jesus used His divine power to save other people, but not to save Himself. SRme 1.957
Jesus did not answer any of the questions Herod asked Him. Neither did Jesus reply to His enemies who were loudly accusing Him. Herod became angry because Jesus did not seem to be afraid of him. Herod led his soldiers insulting the Son of God. They laughed at Jesus and treated Him cruelly. Herod was impressed by the noble, Godlike manner of Jesus when He was treated so shamefully. Herod was afraid to say Jesus was guilty. So Herod sent Jesus back to Pilate. SRme 1.958
