Counsel #19 — The Perfect Example CWe 108

Picture: Counsel #19 — The Perfect Example CWe 108.1

In the Bible, Jesus modeled self-control over physical appetite, showing us the importance of prioritizing spiritual needs over temporary cravings. When tempted by Satan in the wilderness after fasting for 40 days, Jesus refused to turn stones into bread, responding, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."[136]Matthew 4:4 CWe 108.2

This response by Jesus highlights His reliance on God’s Word rather than succumbing to physical hunger. Appetites, whether for food, power, or comfort, can easily control us if left unchecked. Jesus demonstrated that discipline and self-control given through the Holy Spirit will equip us to overcome these desires. Seeking God first, focusing on His purpose for our lives, and staying in relationship with Him, we receive power to master our appetites, live purposefully, and strengthen our faith.[137] https://adventistreview.org/my-church/leading-by-example/ CWe 108.3

“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1, 2 NIV CWe 108.4

“The example of Christ is authoritative for every son and daughter of Adam. His life was the law of God lived and exemplified, a perfect pattern for all humanity, showing what man may become by partaking of the divine nature.” Ellen White in The Signs of the Times, 1896, par. 1 CWe 108.5
