    C. Summary

The period 1850-74 was a time of gradual expansion of the view of the missionary task. It was a period of transition from the idea of an imminent Second Advent to a realization that before Christ could return the third angel’s message had to be proclaimed world-wide. The concept of “the remnant” did not interfere with the mission thrust because the event of the parousia was understood to await the accomplishment of the mission of the third angel and not the amassing of a certain quantity of believers. As the result of successful mission outreach, the shut-door concept continued to be modified. Although the emphasis shifted from the shut- to the open-door concept, the view that there was a shut door in 1844 was retained and became a part of SDA soteriology and missiology. Further developments in the sanctuary theology removed all theological obstructions against mission among non-Adventists.FSDA 292.2

It was especially Revelation 10:11 which was employed as a symbol for the SDA mission to other nations. At first many thought that this text was being adequately fulfilled when the third angel’s message began to be accepted by European immigrants in North America. But expansion of SDA mission and of the understanding of Revelation 10:11 occurred when converted immigrants sent literature to relatives in Europe.FSDA 292.3

Until 1874 the missionary expansion of the SDA outside North America was conducted primarily by the distribution of literature. Growing requests for literature from many countries led to the introduction of the term “world-wide” as designating the mandatory extent of the missionary task. The significance and extent of the mission of the third angel also came to be associated with such texts as Mt. 24:14 and Mark 16:15, the interpretation of which was directly influenced by successful mission efforts.FSDA 292.4
