III. Hawtrey-Advent and Resurrection Begin Millennium

CHARLES S. HAWTREY (1780-1831), secretary of the Society for Promoting Christianity Among the Jews, and editor of The Jewish Expositor, was educated at Oriel College, Oxford, with a B.A. in 1801 and an M.A. in 1813. Curate of Holyrood, South Hampton, and vicar of Wilston, Monmouth, in 1805, he became minister of the Episcopal Chapel for the Jews, at Bethnal Green. 59Alumni Oxonienses, 1715-1886, vol. 2, p. 631. In the roster of officers and trustees in the Summary Account of the Origin, Proceedings, and Success of the London Society for Promoting Christianity Among the Jews, Sir Thomas Baring, M.P., is president; Henry Drummond and Lewis Way are among the vice-presidents, and Hawtrey is the first of the three secretaries. 1. RESURRECTION MARKS BEGINNING OF MILLENNIUM

Apart from his editorial writing in The Jewish Expositor, Hawtrey wrote The Nature of the First Resurrection, in 1826, with the anonymous signature, “A Spiritual Watchman.” 60Identified in Joshua W. Brooks, A Dictionary of Writers on the Prophecies, p. xxxix. In this treatise, which was originally a sermon, he stresses the “literal resurrection of the saints.” 61Charles S. Hawtrey, The Nature of the First Resurrection, p. 10. As to the “time,” he says, “It will take place at the commencement, and not at the close of the millennium, or that period designated as ‘a thousand years.’” And as to the “circumstances of it,” Hawtrey adds, “It is equally manifest that it will be preceded by the personal coming and appearance of the Saviour in his glory.” 62Ibid. Contrasting the spiritual reign of Christ between His ascension and His second advent, he says:PFF3 428.4

“But Scripture abundantly testifies that he shall at length appear in person, to reign visibly and gloriously over his church. In the preceding chapter, therefore, there is a most magnificent description of his personal appearance before the first resurrection actually commences.” 63Ibid., p. 11.PFF3 429.1

A series of four lectures delivered in 1830, in which the papal apostasy and the fateful year 1792 were stressed, he like wise published anonymously as a tract, The Pre-millennial Personal Advent of Christ, “By a Spiritual Watchman.”PFF3 429.2

    2. EVENTS FOCUSING AT THE ADVENT

The blending of true and false concepts concerning this event is further attested by a note following the quoted statement, making the second advent to be “synchronical” not only with the first resurrection of the dead and the translation of the saints, but with the fall of Babylon, the destruction of all opposing enemies, the restoration of the Jews, and the conversion of the world. 64Ibid.PFF3 429.3
