    Chapter 9—Prayer and Trust

    BIBLE GEM

“The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in Him. The Lord is good unto them that wait for Him, to the soul that seeketh Him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.”—Lamentations 3:24-26CWG 27.1

    QUESTION

How may I hold fast my hope, and maintain quiet confidence?CWG 27.2

    ANSWER

“Rest in the Lord”: “Our heavenly Father has a thousand ways to provide for us of which we know nothing. Those who accept the one principle of making the service of God supreme, will find perplexities vanish and a plain path before their feet.”—The Ministry of Healing, 481CWG 27.3

A life of restful, peaceful trust: “A life in Christ is a life of restfulness: There may be no ecstasy of feeling, but there should be an abiding, peaceful trust. Your hope is not in yourself; it is in Christ. Your weakness is united to His strength, your ignorance to His wisdom, your frailty to His enduring might. So you are not to look to yourself, not to let the mind dwell upon self, but look to Christ. Let the mind dwell upon His love, upon the beauty, the perfection, of His character. Christ in His self-denial, Christ in His humiliation, ... Christ in His matchless love—this is the subject for the soul's contemplation. It is by loving Him, copying Him, depending wholly upon Him, that you are to be transformed into His likeness.”—Steps to Christ, 70, 71CWG 27.4

The surrendered life: “If we surrender our lives to His service, we can never be placed in a position for which God has not made provision. Whatever may be our situation, we have a Guide to direct our way; whatever may our perplexities, we have a sure Counselor; whatever our sorrow, bereavement, or loneliness, we have a sympathizing Friend. If in our ignorance we make missteps, Christ does not leave us. His voice, clear and distinct, is heard saying, ‘I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.’ ”—Christ's Object Lessons, 173CWG 27.5

Christ our example: “Worry is blind, and cannot discern the future; but Jesus sees the end from the beginning....CWG 28.1

“In the heart of Christ, where reigned perfect harmony with God, there was perfect peace. He was never elated by applause, nor dejected by censure or disappointment. Amid the greatest opposition and the most cruel treatment, He was still of good courage. But many who profess to be His followers have an anxious, troubled heart, because they are afraid to trust themselves with God.”—The Desire of Ages, 330CWG 28.2

God will help those who trust Him: “God will do great things for those who trust in Him. The reason why His professed people have no greater strength is that they trust so much to their own wisdom, and do not give the Lord an opportunity to reveal His power in their behalf. He will help His believing children in every emergency if they will place their entire confidence in Him and faithfully obey Him.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, 493CWG 28.3

    SUMMARY AND PRAYER THOUGHT

Hope, trust, confidence and steadfast faith and a completely surrendered life to the Lord will give us the assurance that we are never alone. Under all circumstances of life we can trust the Lord, and if we trust Him, He will lift our burdens, heal our wounds, comfort our sorrows and surround us with His love. Under His wings we will be protected, cared for and cherished.CWG 28.4
