    Chapter 10—Prayer and Reverence

    BIBLE GEM

“God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about Him.”—Psalm 89:7CWG 29.1

    QUESTION

How may one learn true reverence? Why is reverence important to spiritual growth?CWG 29.2

    ANSWER

A sense of God's greatness and presence: “True reverence for God is inspired by a sense of His infinite greatness and a realization of His presence. With this sense of the Unseen the heart of every child should be deeply impressed.”—Education, 242CWG 29.3

“There is no other way of manifesting reverence so pleasing to Him as obedience to that which He has spoken.”—Education, 244CWG 29.4

Obedience comes from the heart: “All true obedience comes from the heart. It was heart work with Christ. And if we consent, He will so identify Himself with our thoughts and aims, so blend our hearts and minds into conformity to His will, that when obeying Him we shall be but carrying out our own impulses.... When we know God as it is our privilege to know Him, our life will be a life of continual obedience. Through an appreciation of the character of Christ, through communion with God, sin will become hateful to us.”—The Desire of Ages, 668CWG 29.5

With humility and reverence: “Humility and reverence should characterize the deportment of all who come into the presence of God. In the name of Jesus we may come before Him with confidence, but we must not approach Him with the boldness of presumption, as though He were on a level with ourselves. There are those who address the great and all-powerful and holy God, who dwelleth in light unapproachable, as they would address an equal, or even an inferior.... These should remember that they are in His sight whom seraphim adore, before whom angels veil their faces.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, 252CWG 29.6

God is at the place of prayer: “The hour and place of prayer are sacred, because God is there; and as reverence is manifested in attitude and demeanor, the feeling that inspires it will be deepened. ‘Holy and reverend is His name,’ the psalmist declares. Angels, when they speak that name, veil their faces. With what reverence, then, should we, who are fallen and sinful, take it upon our lips!”—Gospel Workers, 178.CWG 30.1

“Reverence My sanctuary”: “To the humble, believing soul, the house of God on earth is the gate of heaven. The song of praise, the prayer, the words spoken by Christ's representatives, are God's appointed agencies to prepare a people for the church above, for that loftier worship into which there can enter nothing that defileth.”—Testimonies For The Church 5:491CWG 30.2

Reverence for His name and Word: “Reverence should be shown also for the name of God. Never should that name be spoken lightly or thoughtlessly.”—Education, 243CWG 30.3

“We should reverence God's Word. For the printed volume we should show respect, never putting it to common uses, or handling it carelessly.”—Education, 244CWG 30.4

    SUMMARY AND PRAYER THOUGHT

God will cleanse the world by unquenchable fire soon. Are we fire resistant? Only if we are cleansed and filled and empowered and protected by the Holy Spirit will we escape the holocaust.CWG 30.5

Loving Lord Jesus, help us to realize that at all times we are in the presence of the awesome God, the mighty and powerful Creator of the Universe. God sees and reads every thought and the very intents of our hearts. Nothing is hidden from His all-seeing eyes.CWG 30.6

What reverence we should have when we come into the presence of the Almighty God in prayer. Openness, sincerity, honesty and humility must be the platform from where we approach the throne of mercy through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.CWG 30.7
