    Bishop and Elder the Same

When Paul had set before the church the necessity of order, he set Titus at work to carry out the plan. He wrote him as follows; “For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee.” Titus 1:5. He then proceeds to give the qualifications of a bishop. It may be inquired, why does he specify the qualifications of a bishop, when he told Titus to ordain elders? By comparing what is said in the New Testament respecting the office of bishop, and elder, we see the terms apply to one in charge of a local church, and that both terms apply to the same office. The application of the word “bishop” to one in charge of a “diocese,” composed of many churches, seems to have arisen this side of the time of writing the New Testament.COOD 68.3
