    Who are Heirs?

“And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” 1Galatians 3:29.EVCO 37.1

Of what are we heirs if we are Abraham’s seed?EVCO 37.2

Evidently of the promise to Abraham. But if we are Christ’s then we are heirs with Him; for they are Christ’s who have the Spirit, and they who have the Spirit are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ.EVCO 37.3

So to be a joint-heir with Christ is to be an heir of Abraham.EVCO 37.4

“Heirs according to the promise.” What promise? The promise to Abraham, as a matter of course. And what was that promise? Read Romans 4:13, for an answer.EVCO 37.5

“For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.”EVCO 37.6

So then, they who are Christ’s are heirs of the world. We have already learned this from many texts, but now we see it connected definitely with the promise to Abraham.EVCO 37.7

We have also learned that the inheritance is to be bestowed at the coming of the Lord, for it is when the Lord comes in His glory that He says to the righteous, “Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.”EVCO 37.8

When the world was created it was designed for the habitation of man, and was given to him. But that dominion was lost. True, men now live on the earth, but they do not enjoy the inheritance that God originally gave to man. That was the possession of a perfect creation by perfect beings.EVCO 37.9

While the earth abideth for ever, “Our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.” 11 Chronicles 29:15. No one really possesses anything of this world. Men scheme and labour and fight to amass wealth, and then they “perish, and leave their wealth to others.” 2Psalm 49:10.EVCO 38.1

But God works all things after the counsel of His own will; not one of His purposes will fail; and so as soon as man had sinned and lost his inheritance, a restoration was promised through Christ, in these words: “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” 3Genesis 3:15. In these words the destruction of Satan and all his work was foretold. The “great salvation” “at the first began to be spoken by the Lord.” 4Hebrews 2:3. Thus “the first dominion” 6Daniel 7:27. even “the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.” That will be real possession, for it will be everlasting.EVCO 38.2
