Protestant reformers cried out against the corruption, relentless persecution of dissenters, and spiritual decline of many of the clergy of the Catholic church. They opposed the teaching of unbiblical doctrines such as the head of the church on earth is the vicar of Christ, the eclipse of Christ’s high-priestly mediatorial ministry by popes and priests, the substitution of the mass for the Lord’s Supper, good works as a means of salvation, penance, and indulgences, and that the church, not the Bible, was the final spiritual authority.
