    BUILDING THE ARK

God told Noah exactly what size to make the ark and just how to build the ark. The top of the ark was the same as a house. But the bottom was as a boat so that the ark could float on water. The ark was three stories high. There were no windows in the sides. The light for the ark came from a window in the top that lighted the rooms where the animals were to stay. The ark had one door on the side.SRme 1.204

The ark was made of cypress, or gopher, wood that would not rot for hundreds of years. No human being could have planned a stronger, longer-lasting, well-built ship. God was the designer and Noah was the master builder.SRme 1.205

The work of building the ark took a long time. Every piece of wood used in the ark had to be fitted closely. Every joint was covered with pitch so that the boat would not leak. Noah did everything he could to build a perfect boat. But Noah could not build a ship that was strong enough to survive the violent storm God was going to send to destroy the earth. The people working on the boat did everything they could to make their work perfect. But only a miracle would be able to protect the ark from the angry waves of the Flood.SRme 1.206

When Noah first began preaching, many people seemed to accept his warning. But they did not fully turn to God with true repentance. God gave these people a long time before the Flood came to test whether they truly would follow Him. They failed the test. They were overcome by the terrible sinfulness of the world around them. They joined the wicked in making fun of Noah. They would not give up their sins but continued to marry many wives and yield to their corrupt passions.SRme 1.207

The time that God gave the people to choose to follow Him was almost finished. But God would give the people who did not believe Noah a final special sign of His great power. Noah built the ark exactly as God had said. Noah gathered into the ark a great amount of food for the people and animals who would enter the ark. Then God commanded Noah, "'Go into the boat with your whole family: I have found that you are the only one in all the world who does what is right'" (Gen. 7:1).SRme 1.208
