Chapter 14 — THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL

Joseph listened carefully to what his father, Jacob, taught him about God. Joseph loved the Lord. He followed his father's teachings more carefully than his brothers. He loved to do what God wanted him to do. The wrong things Joseph's brothers did made him sad. He humbly urged them to give up their wicked ways and do what was right. But this made them angry and they turned against Joseph.SRme 1.370

Joseph hated sin so much he felt hurt when his brothers sinned against God. Joseph told his father what his brothers were doing, hoping Jacob could make them change their ways. But Joseph's brothers became angry because he told their father what they were doing. They had noticed how much Jacob loved Joseph, and they became jealous. Their jealousy turned into hate, and finally they planned to kill Joseph.SRme 1.371

The angel of God gave Joseph two dreams. Joseph innocently told his brothers about the dreams. "'We were all in the field tying up sheaves of wheat," he said, "'when my sheaf got up and stood up straight. Yours formed a circle around mine and bowed down to it.'SRme 1.372

"'Do you think you are going to be a king and rule over us?'" Joseph's brothers asked. So they hated him more because of his dreams and because of what he said about them.SRme 1.373

"Then Joseph had another dream and told his brothers, 'I had another dream, in which I saw the sun, the moon, and eleven stars bowing down to me.'SRme 1.374

"He also told the dream to his father, and his father scolded him: What kind of dream is that? Do you think that your mother, your brothers, and I are going to come and bow down to you?` Joseph's brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept thinking about the whole matter" (Gen. 37:7-11).SRme 1.375
