    THE GUIDING CLOUD

The Lord led the Israelites in their travels through the desert. Whenever God lowered the cloud over the sanctuary, it was good for the people and for the glory of God that they stop and camp in a certain place. The pillar of cloud stayed over the sanctuary until God wanted them to travel again. Then the cloud of glory was lifted high above the sanctuary and the Israelites began traveling again.SRme 1.666

During the Israelites' traveling and camping they kept perfect order. Every tribe carried a flag with its own sign upon it. Each tribe was commanded to camp by its own flag. When the Israelites moved, each tribe marched in order behind its flag. When the Israelites rested from their travels, they put up the sanctuary. Then the people in each tribe put up their tents around the sanctuary. The people's tents were at a distance from the sanctuary, in the places that God commanded.SRme 1.667

The ark of the covenant was carried in front of the Israelites when they traveled. "The cloud of the Lord was over them by day, as they left the camp. And whenever the ark was moved with the Israelites, Moses said, 'Rise up, O Lord! May Your enemies be scattered; may Your enemies flee before You.' Whenever God's cloud stopped moving, Moses said, 'Return, O Lord, to the many thousands of Israel.'"SRme 1.668
