Counsel #17 — The Body and Identity

Picture: Counsel #17 — The Body and IdentityCSL 27.1

Our identity is made up of our body, mind, and soul. When we think about who we are in Christ, we often focus on our spiritual and mental experience, but our physical health also plays a huge part. God cares about our physical well-being as much as He does our spiritual.[33]3 John 2 Taking care of our bodies, including exercise, adequate sleep, and eating nourishing food in temperate amounts, is also important. Understanding that God designed our bodies for His glory is our ultimate purpose for their care.[34] https://adventistreview.org/my-church/blessed-beyond-measure-a-personal-glimpse-into-a-healthy-lifestyle/ CSL 27.2

This means that looking after our physical health isn’t just about feeling great or looking a certain way; it’s an act of responsible management and worship. When we choose to eat and drink to the glory of God, we are actively bringing our physical lives into line with our spiritual identity.CSL 27.3

“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 NKJVCSL 27.4

“Our bodies have been given us to use in God’s service, and He desires that we shall care for and appreciate them. Our bodies must be kept in the best possible condition physically, and under the most spiritual influences....” Ellen White in My Life Today, p. 125CSL 27.5

Reflect: How can you cultivate a mindset that sees healthy eating, exercise, and adequate sleep as acts of worship?CSL 27.6
