Matthew 16

1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.NHEB — Matthew 16:1

2 But he answered and said to them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'NHEB — Matthew 16:2

3 In the morning, 'It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.NHEB — Matthew 16:3

4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there will be no sign given to it, except the sign of Jonah." He left them, and departed.NHEB — Matthew 16:4

5 The disciples came to the other side and had forgotten to take bread.NHEB — Matthew 16:5

6 Jesus said to them, "Watch out and guard yourselves against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."NHEB — Matthew 16:6

7 They reasoned among themselves, saying, "We brought no bread."NHEB — Matthew 16:7

8 But Jesus, becoming aware of this, said, "You of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves about having no bread?NHEB — Matthew 16:8

9 Do you still not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?NHEB — Matthew 16:9

10 Nor the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up?NHEB — Matthew 16:10

11 Why is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."NHEB — Matthew 16:11

12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.NHEB — Matthew 16:12

13 Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"NHEB — Matthew 16:13

14 They said, "Some say John the Baptist, some, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets."NHEB — Matthew 16:14

15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"NHEB — Matthew 16:15

16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."NHEB — Matthew 16:16

17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.NHEB — Matthew 16:17

18 I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this Rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.NHEB — Matthew 16:18

19 I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."NHEB — Matthew 16:19

20 Then he commanded the disciples that they should tell no one that he is the Christ.NHEB — Matthew 16:20

21 From that time, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.NHEB — Matthew 16:21

22 Peter took him aside, and began to rebuke him, saying, "Far be it from you, Lord. This will never be done to you."NHEB — Matthew 16:22

23 But he turned, and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan. You are a stumbling block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of humans."NHEB — Matthew 16:23

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.NHEB — Matthew 16:24

25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it.NHEB — Matthew 16:25

26 For what will it profit a person, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his life? Or what will a person give in exchange for his life?NHEB — Matthew 16:26

27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds.NHEB — Matthew 16:27

28 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste of death, until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom."NHEB — Matthew 16:28
