As the flood progressed, it destroyed terrestrial ecosystems in succession, burying organisms accordingly. It is uncertain when the rising waters reached the ark and floated it away from its construction site; it might have been late in the flood, potentially explaining the scarcity of human fossils. Eventually, the ark landed, freeing its inhabitants to roam the new landscape. Any subsequent fossils would be from animals on the newly formed land during the flood’s later stages when conditions were still catastrophic. These animals then had to traverse the earth from continent to continent. Advances in biogeography (the study of organism distribution over the earth) suggest that animals and plants can travel on oceanic masses of floating plant debris, such as logs or mats of living trees and other plants. This still occurs today on a small scale.
