    Counsel #24 — Respect

    Picture: Counsel #24 — RespectCR 200.1

What if your spouse recorded everything you said to them this week? Would you be proud to listen back? It’s a sobering question, isn’t it? In marriage, respect doesn’t just show up in public moments or big decisions. It’s woven into the tone we use at dinner, the way we respond when we’re tired, and how we talk about each other when no one’s listening.CR 200.2

Jesus gave us the ultimate Example of respect. He didn’t interrupt or mock people, and He didn’t gossip about those who society dismissed. In our marriages, we reflect Christ when we offer that same level of care during the easy and tough conversations. Respect in marriage isn’t about always agreeing, but sharing the responsibility to honor each other in all situations. Examples of not respecting your spouse can look like eye-rolling, looking at your phone as they speak, or dismissively responding “whatever” when they open their heart to you. These reactions don’t reflect Christ and will only lead to intimacy issues within the marriage. Every day and every moment with your spouse should be spent respecting the one God gave you to love.[208] https://www.marriage.com/advice/relationship/reasons-why-respect-is-important-in-a-relationship/ CR 200.3
