Counsel #18 — Taming the Tongue

Picture: Counsel #18 — Taming the TongueCR 107.1

One of the most common things that young people hear from a parent growing up is, “Watch what you say.” Although constantly hearing this may seem annoying, it’s important to realize how much your communication reflects your character.CR 107.2

According to today’s world view, it’s normal to use foul language and insults to express emotion in conversations. Whether in arguments, everyday conversation, or over social media, harsh words are used to dominate someone or prove a point. While this may offer temporary satisfaction, using foul or offensive language only damages relationships and can lead to resentment. In contrast, Christian communication takes a different approach. It means thinking before reacting and intentionally choosing words that bring clarity while still addressing the conflict with grace. We’re not always going to agree with everyone, and there may be times when we feel great offense. It’s in these moments that we need to cling closely to God, for only He can tame a harsh tongue.[110] https://ilford.adventistchurch.org.uk/bibleinfo_topics/bad-language CR 107.3

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:6 NIVCR 107.4

“The only words that should come from our lips should be pure, clean words.” Ellen White in The Faith I Live By, p. 236CR 107.5

Reflect: Do you use profanity when speaking to your friends? If so, do you understand why it is important to change your language to reflect the Christian standard?CR 107.6
