Counsel #25 — Freedom of Speech

Picture: Counsel #25 — Freedom of SpeechCR 114.1

Liberty in communication means the freedom to express thoughts, ideas, and beliefs without fear of suppression. It’s a foundational aspect of open societies, allowing people to exchange perspectives, challenge ideas, and contribute to meaningful conversations. In Christianity, liberty in communication also means using this freedom responsibly, ensuring our words reflect truth, kindness, and respect.CR 114.2

Censorship, on the other hand, can limit this freedom by controlling or restricting speech. While some censorship may be necessary to prevent harm, misinformation, or hateful content, excessive censorship can silence valuable voices and prevent the open exchange of ideas. In some cases, Christians may face censorship when expressing their faith or standing up for moral beliefs. However, the Bible encourages believers to speak truth with love. This means using our freedom of speech to build others up and glorify God, engaging with all in respectful dialogue. By balancing freedom of speech and respect, Christians can promote understanding and demonstrate God’s love in every way.[117] https://gc.adventist.org/official-statements/freedom-of-speech-and-defamation-of-religion/ CR 114.3

“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” Ephesians 4:15 NIVCR 114.4

“The voice is an entrusted talent, and it should be used to help and encourage and strengthen our fellowmen.” Ellen White in My Life Today, p. 114CR 114.5

Reflect: Are you using your freedom of speech responsibly? What specific things do you usually speak up about?CR 114.6
