    Counsel #12 — Political Neglect

    Picture: Counsel #12 — Political NeglectCSI 140.1

In some countries, there is a lack of political will to address global health challenges, due to several factors:CSI 140.2

  • A focus on other priorities, such as economic development, security, or social welfare.
  • Lack of understanding of the importance of global health. Some governments may not fully realize that global health challenges can have a significant impact on their own country.
  • Nationalism/exceptionalism. Some governments may believe that their own country is superior to other countries, and that they should not have to help other countries address their health challenges.
  • Fear of the costs. In actuality, the costs of inaction might be even higher. For example, if a government does not invest in vaccination programs, it may face a major outbreak of a preventable disease, which could have significant economic and social impact.
  • “Defend the poor and fatherless; do justice to the afflicted and needy.” Psalms 82:3 NJVCSI 140.3

“None who came to [Jesus] for aid went away unrelieved. Not a thread of selfishness was woven into the pattern He has left for His children to follow.” Ellen White in Welfare Ministry, p. 116[193]https://adventistreview.org/2011-1529/2011-1529-14/CSI 140.4

Reflect: If you were an educator raising awareness of the importance of global health, what points would you make?CSI 140.5
