Counsel #8 — Exercising My Right

Picture: Counsel #8 — Exercising My RightCSI 10.1

While we have the right to defend ourselves, we don't always have to exercise that right. This dilemma is especially challenging for Christians, as the Bible supports both sides. Exodus 22:2 says, “If a thief is caught in the act of breaking in and is beaten to death, no one is guilty of bloodshed,”[19]Christian Standard Bible version (CSB) indicating no guilt in self-defense.CSI 10.2

However, Jesus advised, “Do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also.”[20]Matthew 5:39 NLT Jesus exemplified this by never harming anyone in self-defense.During His mock trial the Jewish throng hurled verbal abuse at Him while the astonished Pilate witnessed Jesus’ silent eloquence, refusing to defend Himself. Pilate asked, “Are you King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world, [if it were] then would My servants fight.”[21]John 18:35 Then soldiers spat on Jesus, whipped Him, and ultimately nailed Him to a cross to die — again, never defending Himself, yet asking God to forgive them! “Then some began to spit on him, and to blindfold him, and to strike him with their fists, saying, “Prophesy!” The guards also took him and beat him.” Mark 14:65 NETCSI 10.4

“None were justified in avenging themselves, for they had the words of the Lord: [‘Don't try to get even. Trust the Lord, and he will help you.’ Proverbs 20:22 CEV]” Ellen White in Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 70CSI 10.5

Reflect: How can you discern the Christ-like response in a dangerous situation?CSI 10.6
