Counsel #3 — What Self-Respect Is Not
Picture: Counsel #3 — What Self-Respect Is NotCI 28.1
Today let’s point out what biblical self-respect is not:
CI 28.2
Self-deification.We are not divine. We have the opportunity to identify as children of God, not God Himself.
Perfection. This view ignores the Fall of humanity described in Genesis 3. After Adam and Eve sinned, humanity’s nature became sinful and wicked.
Worthiness. It is because we are unworthy that Christ died in our place.
As followers of Christ, our self-respect is derived from Christ’s love for us, as evidenced on the cross. So, we must be careful not to substitute “self-originated” respect for what God gives us—true repentance and power to turn away from sinful living.CI 28.3
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20 ESVCI 28.4
“None are so sinful that they cannot find strength, purity, and righteousness in Jesus, who died for them. He is waiting to strip them of their garments stained and polluted with sin, and to put upon them the white robes of righteousness; He bids them live and not die.” Ellen White in Steps to Christ, p. 52CI 28.5
Reflect: Understanding the biblical definition of self-respect (as outlined above), how does it change your view of self and of others?CI 28.6
