Counsel #15 — Escaping Comparison Traps

Picture: Counsel #15 — Escaping Comparison TrapsCLi 25.1

Constant use of social media often exposes users to idealized versions of others’ lives, leading them to subconsciously measure their own experiences against these unrealistic portrayals. Many people frequent social media in search of something—whether purpose, validation, or acceptance—making them more vulnerable to these distorted realities.CLi 25.2

Unlike real-life interactions, social media provides constant access to the curated lives of others, encouraging frequent comparison. The problem is that people tend to share only their best moments, creating an illusion of a “perfect life” that appears free from hardship or stress. This leads users, especially young people, to feel inferior, increasing feelings of inadequacy and envy.CLi 25.3

To avoid this comparison trap, focus on growing beyond who you were yesterday. God created each of us in His image to reflect His character. Instead of comparing to others, measure your progress by how you’re growing in Christ.[22]https://Proverbs 31.org/read/devotions/full-post/2018/01/15/breaking-free-of-the-comparison-trapCLi 25.4

“We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.” 2 Corinthians 10:12 NIVCLi 25.5

“Many measure themselves among themselves, and compare their lives with the lives of others. This should not be. No one but Christ is given us as an example. He is our true pattern, and each should strive to excel in imitating Him…” Ellen White in That I May Know Him, p. 174CLi 25.6

Reflect: Who do you often compare yourself to?CLi 25.7
