Counsel #19 — The Spiritual Shield

Picture: Counsel #19 — The Spiritual ShieldCLi 106.1

Resisting the temptation of pornography is only possible when we partner with the Holy Spirit’s power, assisted by recalling God’s promises for victory in scripture. Many people believe if they try hard enough or have enough therapy, porn’s temptations will pass, and their problems will eventually go away — but this is just another deception from the enemy. The only way to flee any temptation and resist the devil is to shield ourselves with the Bible and its promises.[98]https://newhope.adventistfaith.org/bibleinfo_topics/temptation?_=1732492530269.1943CLi 106.2

The Bible yields life-changing insight and encouragement, reminding us that the same God who parted the Red Sea and brought the Israelites through on dry ground can keep us from sinning. Claiming scriptures like 1 Corinthians 10:13—which promises God will make a way to escape when we are being tempted—empowers us with the strength to resist. Quoting scripture aloud, as Jesus did during His temptation in the wilderness, serves to help refocus our mind on God’s saving truth and away from Satan’s lies and deceit.CLi 106.3

“I will not look with approval on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do; I will have no part in it.” Psalms 101:3 NIVCLi 106.4

“The believer thus makes a sacrifice for Christ which his conscience approves, and which shows that he values eternal life too highly to run the risk of losing it.” Ellen White in Counsels for the Church, p. 90CLi 106.5
