Counsel #20 — Trapped By Triggers

Picture: Counsel #20 — Trapped By TriggersCLi 107.1

To break the stronghold of pornography, an addict needs to be intentional about avoiding people, places, or things that trigger a desire to sin. For example, if a person knows being alone at home is a trigger to watch porn, perhaps it may be helpful to move in with a friend or invite someone to come stay with them while vulnerable and in the process of healing.[99]https://www.biblicalcounselingcoalition.org/2018/03/20/troubled-by-triggers/CLi 107.2

Aside from establishing accountability partners and avoiding triggers, taking steps to restrict personal access to inappropriate images and videos such as filtering online content or throwing away explicit reading material is necessary. It may also be beneficial to spend more time doing constructive activities such as exercising (outdoors when possible!) or enjoyable hobbies as a distraction from focusing on pornography. Creating a structured daily routine minimizes idle time, which is a common trigger for temptation. Instead, focusing on personal growth, spiritual renewal, and building healthy, meaningful relationships with others establishes healthy patterns to replace old, harmful habits.CLi 107.3

“But each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.” James 1:14 NIVCLi 107.4

“Avoid reading and seeing things which will suggest impure thoughts. Cultivate the moral and intellectual powers.” Ellen White in Letters to Young Lovers, p. 26CLi 107.5

Reflect: Have you detected what triggers you to sin? If so, do you intentionally avoid these things? If not, how can you become aware?CLi 107.6
