    Counsel #6 — Harmful Music

    Picture: Counsel #6 — Harmful MusicCLi 77.1

Many people assert that there is no such thing as “bad” music. However, music is a powerful communicator. Negative lyrics can increase anxiety and worsen the mood. Some lyrics advocate substance abuse, unhealthy or violent behavior, and sexual immorality.[70]https://www.chnola.org/news-blog/2023/april/the-harmful-side-of-music-understanding-the-effe/CLi 77.2

It is important to avoid music, whether instrumental or with lyrics, that promotes a message or physical state of being contrary to God’s desire for our wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. Music may seem to aid with the release of negative emotion through lyrics that describe everything that is wrong with society, but it is not a permanent escape from the troubles of this world. Only God can give the long-term peace we long for.CLi 77.3

“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:2 NKJVCLi 77.4

“Music, when not abused, is a great blessing; but when put to a wrong use, it is a terrible curse. It excites, but does not impart that strength and courage which the Christian can find only at the throne of grace…” Ellen White in Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 496, 497CLi 77.5

Reflect: Do you use music as an escape? What music could you listen to that would encourage you to escape to God?CLi 77.6
