Because the Bible is clear we can’t do anything to contribute to our salvation, it makes sense that God must initiate every aspect of our salvation, short of our own choice. A brief overview of world history demonstrates this. For example, God went looking for Adam and Eve in the Garden while they hid themselves. After Cain murdered Abel, God also went looking for him and initiated a conversation. Again, God chose Abraham and led Him out of Ur. He came to Jacob in a dream. He called Moses to deliver the Israelites from slavery. Finally, God came as one of us and died to make our salvation possible. The Bible consistently presents God as a pursuer and initiator—we love because He first loved us. Grace is an attribute of God exercised toward undeserving human beings. We did not seek for it, but it was sent in search of us. God rejoices to bestow His grace upon us, not because we are worthy, but because we are so utterly unworthy. Our only claim to His mercy is our great need.
