Counsel #8 — Jesus Modeled Forgiveness

Picture: Counsel #8 — Jesus Modeled ForgivenessCR 164.1

The Bible is replete with stories that underscore the profound importance of forgiveness. A prime example is the parable of the Prodigal Son, which vividly illustrates God's unconditional love and the transformative power of forgiveness. The Lord's Prayer itself serves as a poignant reminder of our dependence on God's grace and our reciprocal obligation to extend forgiveness to others. Yet perhaps the most compelling demonstration of forgiveness is found in the life of Jesus Christ. On the cross, as He endured unimaginable suffering, Jesus modeled the ultimate act of forgiveness by asking God to forgive His tormentors. This selfless plea encapsulates the essence of Christian forgiveness.[161]https://hegetsus.com/en/articles/jesus-chose-forgivenessCR 164.2

“When you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.” Mark 11:25 NLTCR 164.3

“While the soldiers were doing their fearful work [of nailing Jesus to the cross at Calvary], and He was enduring the most acute agony, Jesus prayed for His enemies—'Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.’ Luke 23:34. That prayer of Christ for His enemies embraced the world, taking in every sinner who should live, until the end of time.” Ellen White in The Story of Redemption, p. 222CR 164.4

Reflect: Are there specific relationships in your life where extending forgiveness is particularly difficult? How can you apply the principles of Christ-like forgiveness to these situations?CR 164.5
