Counsel #10 — Disciplining The Early Adolescent

Picture: Counsel #10 — Disciplining the Early AdolescentCR 121.1

Disciplining your 8—12-year-old child requires a delicate balance of love, guidance, and firm expectations. As they navigate the complexities of early adolescence, their need for structure and direction remains crucial. However, discipline should not be synonymous with punishment. Instead, focus on gently redirecting your child toward Jesus and His example, seeking wisdom from the Holy Spirit in your approach.[114]https://family.adventist.org/correction-with-grace/CR 121.2

Just as God is merciful and patient with us, we should extend the same grace to our children. Patiently educate them about their role within the family, encouraging them to share in home tasks and contribute to the maintenance of the household. As older children grow, they can take on additional duties, such as caring for younger siblings or helping with more difficult chores. This not only instills a sense of responsibility but also strengthens their character and work ethic.CR 121.3

By setting clear expectations, providing consistent and patient guidance, and offering opportunities for growth and development of household skills, you can help your child develop self-discipline, respect for authority, and a strong moral compass.CR 121.4

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23, 24 NIVCR 121.5
