Counsel #23 — Foes To Friends

Picture: Counsel #23 — Foes to FriendsCR 41.1

Surprisingly enough, prior enemies can become friends when both parties choose forgiveness, understanding, and a willingness to let go of past wrongdoings. Transforming enmity into friendship, if you believe God is calling you to this decision, requires both humility and open communication.CR 41.2

Jesus calls us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.[41]Matthew 5:44 Although extremely difficult and sometimes seemingly impossible, forgiving past grievances allows for healing and the possibility of a new beginning. Former rivals in a workplace or community setting might bond over shared challenges or successes, realizing their strengths complement one another. In addition, praying over a certain issue in a friendship could lead to God changing your perspective, causing you to see someone you once disliked in a positive light. Overcoming hostility requires effort, but the resulting friendship can be deeper and more meaningful because it’ll be built on resolution and growth. Such transformations show the true power of forgiveness.[42]https://www.chapeloaks.org/chapeloaks-blog1/love-your-enemiesCR 41.3

“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” Matthew 5:44 NIVCR 41.4

“Like Christ we shall forgive our enemies, and watch for opportunities to show those who have harmed us that we love their souls, and if we could, would do them good...” Ellen White in Sons and Daughters of God, p. 90CR 41.5

Reflect: Have you ever become friends with someone who was once your enemy? Was that an easy process? Was it worth it?CR 41.6
